Redbone: A Novel of Love, Betrayal, and Murder by Sandra Dickerson The female lead, Dr. Louise Brisbane has travelled a great distance from a Chicago gang infested neighborhood to the achievement of an Ivy League education. She ends up breaking two glass ceilings: first, that of becoming a top level executive at a Fortune 500 company, and second that of a Black woman hired to that position. Dr. Brisbane desires to "marry up" since she is the product of a working class family. Her father, John Paul Brisbane, owns a salvage company. Her mother is disabled and does not work. As the novel commences, Dr. Brisbane meets and soon becomes engaged to Attorney Hammond Oglesby, who hails from an old moneyed family that traces its roots from Black Walls Street. However, Redbone, a Lieutenant in the Chiefs, a South Side gang, functions like the marrow in Mary Louise's bones. Sexual conflicts, complex love, betrayal, and murder provide an intriguing story. Redbone's world of crime and drugs is threaded through the work. Additionally Hammond Oglesby's world of old money is elaborated. Mary Louise walks in both worlds during the story. Micro aggression, and racism, as well as class oppression from Blacks thread through the story. The work contains vivid descriptions of sexual acts.
