Based on a true life story: As if growing up in the hood wasn't hard enough, as a biracial half White, half Black girl, LaMonica Powers has to also navigate finding her identity (whatever that means). She's not accepted in the suburban White schools her mama carts her off to and she's not fully accepted by the Black community either.

Add in a heaping of undiagnosed ADHD, a cup of discipline dealt out "southern style," throw in some seeds of God given talent and intellect - and you've got yourself a recipe for a pretty, hot, ghetto surprise. It would be a miracle if she didn't fall prey to the statistical forces pulling at her from all sides.

This coming of age tale is a cross between "A Hero Ain't Nothin' But A Sandwich" and "A Child Called It."

Trigger warnings: Racial overtones acted out through politically incorrect speech, alcohol abuse, emotional abuse, child abuse, rape, and very mild profanity.

Goodreads Reviews

Such an amazing story. You see mixed races quite frequently nowadays but did you ever wonder what life was like for them? This book gives you insight on how a beautiful child was treated for something she had no control of.. her race. The author gave great detail about her life and it so emotional you can't help but to feel compassion. Great book and I can't wait to read to part 2 Suelynn

"Have you let him play under your clothes yet?"

"What?" LaMonica exclaimed in disbelief.

"Girl, don't you say what to me.

"I've been watching how you talk to yo' Mama. Answering her with yes and no. You're supposed to say yes ma'am and no ma'am when addressing adults.

"And don't you ever in yo' life say what to me

"Yo' mama gave me full permission to whip you if I need to. And I will grab a switch and tear yo' tail up if need be.

"All I know is if you think this boy likes you for anything more than playing under your clothes then you ain't got the sense God gave a fool."

"Uh huh, he does like me. We talk about books and all kinds of things. We don't even talk about nasty stuff.

"And I am smart. I won the spelling bee for the entire district last year. And my mama says I'm smart."

"Girl, have you lost yo' got dang mind? Ooh, if you were my child, I would slap the mess out of you right now.

"Mrs. Powers ain't taught you not to answer adults back?

"I would get a switch and whip you right now. But you've got me so upset if I hit you I might break yo' narrow tail into.

"LaMonica you ain't nothin' but a fool right. Mrs. Powers' family was right about you. You ain't gone turn out to be nothin' but a lil' whore like yo' mama.

"Because ain't no way a boy wrote you a letter like this unless you was actin' fast with him first.

LaMonica was only twelve years old and still a virgin. But if Ms. Demona told Mama something like that, she would most likely believe her. LaMonica was routinely in trouble, and it would be her word over the word of an adult. She decided she had no choice but to listen to Ms. Demona.

Ms. Demona demanded to know if that was Randall standing in front of the building.

I found your little letter and LaMonica doesn't need any friends at this time. Especially not any friends that are boys. I'm working with Mrs. Powers to help get LaMonica under control. She comes from a rough background."

"A rough background?" Randall asked.

"Yes. She actually was one of those drug babies
