The book "Nightmare" is about the plight of the African American from broken dreams to broken hearts chronicled in twenty-seven themes. The author portrays the many facets of the African American struggle for acceptance, class, and love. It creates the picture of African Americans in styles that your mind will bleed and beat for the souls that were dreaming of a better life in American but were disappointed beyond their wildest dream and expectations. The black child without any particular explanation finds out they are reduced to, objects of sex, mockeries, games, entertainment, laughter, and scorn. Theme one, two, and twenty-five were in memory of a demised friend. Theme three depicts the harsh reality of the African American in a colorful exposition through the lens of pain and tears like drops of blood the writer expresses love for family wrapped up in a life of insecurity, helplessness, insensitivity, drug, and rape. The author continued with kindness in theme five, defining the eternal meaning of kindness unfettered with the heartless limitations of contemporary society. Theme six presented the dissatisfaction with the skin color of the African American, that though beautiful, this beauty was locked up in the mind-set prison of the white skin is better. The sad experience of Gene, a typical dilemma of vulnerable girls in their teen was related. Abused, used, raped and dumped by their pimps without a future and a means to live on. They contemplate and yearn for that which is sacred, but they were too unhallowed to acquire the peace and serenity of mind without contours.
