This book is a work of historical fiction. It is a story of my great, great grandfather Clinton Price born a Georgia slave in 1814. Through a series of miracles, Clinton was able to keep his entire family together first in Georgia and then in Texas. Though we do not know his exact words, this book is a result of more than 25 years of research so that it's depiction of slave life is accurate to the last detail. You will better understand where they lived, what they wore, what they ate, their superstitions, how they spent their limited free time and how they cured their illnesses. Perhaps most importantly, you will better understand how they endured. Too often slavery has been reduced to numbers, the Civil War and one dimensional characters. The humanity or lack thereof of the Negro slave and their slave masters have been historically ripped from their souls in an expedited attempt to explain this Peculiar Institution. There are descriptions of scenes that must be explained in context for the youngest to fully understand. After all, brutality was the most common method used to ensure compliance. Ultimately, this is a story of a man, a family and his friends and how they lived, struggled and thrived in the most brutal period in US history.
