Chocolate City

Set in 1979-80, CHOCOLATE CITY revolves around the struggles and triumphs of Carl West, a recent African-American law school graduate from California who has been hired as an attorney with the Federal Government in Washington, DC. The novel explores his many relationships with co-workers and others, as he navigates a profession and city that is still plagued by the systemic racism that is ingrained into American society. During this journey through one year of his life, Carl must balance his frequently odious work environment with his budding romance with a young female doctor and the demands of a black community theater group, which he has joined off-hours in reviving his college-years passion for the stage.
