"A WOMAN APART (ADA'S STORY)" is a novel about great expectations. When Ada, a mulatto ex- slave marries Gabe, she supposes that her husband is a man of honor, courage, and strength. When they make a decision to return to his native land, she expects that life will be better for her and their daughter, Arga. Tragedy strikes on their way to Africa. In Africa, Ada discovers that her great love, Gabe is not the man of steel thought he was. More importantly, she finds that she is not the person she expected to be. As time passes, after a number of harrowing twists and turns, Ada yearns to return to America where life made sense to her.
