The wide-ranging selections are structured around five interconnected nodes: war; food; work, play, and travel; religions; and human and nonhuman interfaces. Through these five categories, Wai Chee Dimock and a team of emerging scholars reveal American literature to be a complex network, informed by crosscurrents both macro and micro, with local practices intensified by international concerns. Selections include poetry from Anne Bradstreet to Jorie Graham; the fiction of Herman Melville, Gertrude Stein, and William Faulkner; Benjamin Franklin's parables; Frederick Douglass's correspondence; Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders; Langston Hughes's journalism; and excerpts from The Autobiography of Malcom X as well as Octavia Butler's Dawn. Popular genres such as the crime novels of Raymond Chandler, the comics of Art Spiegelman, the science fiction of Philip K. Dick, and recipes from Alice B. Toklas are all featured. More recent authors include Junot Diaz, Leslie Marmon Silko, Jonathan Safran Foer, Edwidge Danticat, Gary Shteyngart, and Jhumpa Lahiri. These selections speak to readers at all levels and invite them to try out fresh groupings and remap American literature. a spoken word poetry collection that awakens the reader to the psychological, emotional, mental and physical battles many...may experience while traveling the rugged road of life, using her poetry as a poignant testimony to declare that even on the darkest and cloudiest of days, we can, with will, faith and resilience, survive And not just survive...but bloom into something virtuously beautiful.It is a book that characterizes a woman who refuses to turn a blind eye to the countless injustices and myths revolving in our society that often deter many people from becoming the best version of themselves they can possibly become.When it comes to speaking raw truth, it is quite easy to connect with Author Adrienne Ijioma's writing and poetry, as she does a superb job at relating to people and situations, touching on topics that are sensitive to mostly all adults...Through expressive, poignant and insightful views on the world, we learn how Author Adrienne Ijioma uses her experiences to become a discerning and wise mind in life rather than a victim, in many poems, offering good advice and guidance that can be helpful to others while simultaneously representing who she is and what she stands for.From a creative and technical perspective, we enjoy the flow of Ijioma's clean-cut simple rhymes, as they present her feelings and thoughts in a manner that is easily interpretable, considering poetry's eminent 'abstract' and 'subjective' reputation.This particular style and technique of writing uses every day, ordinary vernacular rather than complex, elaborate metaphors or allegories, reflecting a lecture-like elegance that aims to express as much as persuade.The intermittent bodies of prose scattered between organized sections of poems based on theme selection is an added advantage in reading this book Not only is it refreshing to read the detailed narration and well-written, diary-like mini sagas before diving into an emotive poetic experience, the passages also provide great depth and insight into the overall background of how and why some of the poems that make up this collection were originally born.Author Adrienne Ijioma's spirit is consistently transcendently elevated through her inspiring power-verses that humbly value her worth and represent her heart with virtue, resilience, respect, edification and love."Cuts On Me," a 5-star...book for women, but great enough for all

Binding Type: Paperback
Author: Ijioma, Adrienne
Published: 05/17/2018
Publisher: Independently Published
ISBN: 9781982921798
Pages: 114
Weight: 0.39lbs
Size: 9.00h x 6.00w x 0.27d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0021/1697/6715/products/img_07cf0a55-e347-499d-810c-6acbdae58721.jpg?v=1605738005
bite-9781983773457
Bite
The sophomore release from poet Taz Weysweet

Binding Type: Paperback
Author: Weysweete', Taz
Published: 02/20/2018
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781983773457
Pages: 144
Weight: 0.49lbs
Size: 9.02h x 5.98w x 0.34d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0021/1697/6715/products/img_84b98b42-8f07-4fd2-b3b0-c494b5740707.jpg?v=1605738120
poeticolors-kaleidoscope-9781985646384
Poeticolors: kaleidoscope
A book of woven carefully woven words inspired by most of our human emotions and some of the most common experiences that aims directly at relating to the many emotions we experience daily. Scholars have taken a renewed interest in Dunbar but much is still unknown about this once-famous African American author's life and literary efforts. Dunbar's letters to various editors, friends, benefactors, scholars, and family members are crucial to any critical or theoretical understanding of his journey as a writer. His literary correspondence, in particular, records the development of an extraordinary figure whose work reached a broad readership in his lifetime, but not without considerable cost.

The Selected Literary Letters of Paul Laurence Dunbar is a collection of 250 letters, transcribed and annotated, that reveal the personal and literary life of one of the most highly regarded African American writers and intellectuals. Editors Cynthia C. Murillo and Jennifer M. Nader highlight Dunbar not just as a determined author and master of rhetoric, but also as a young, sensitive, thoughtful, keenly intelligent, and talented writer who battled depression, alcoholism, and tuberculosis as well as rejection and racism. Despite Dunbar's personal struggles, his literary letters disclose that he was full of hopes and dreams coupled with the resolve to flourish as a writer--at almost any cost, even when it caused controversy.

Taken together, Dunbar's letters depict his concerted effort to succeed as an author within an overtly racist literary culture, among sharp divides within the African American intellectual community, and in opposition to the demands of popular public tastes--often dictated by the demands of publishers. This wide-ranging selection of Dunbar's most relevant literary letters will serve to correct many matters of conjecture about Dunbar's life, writing, and choices by supplying factual evidence to counter speculation, assumption, and incomplete information.

Binding Type: Hardcover
Author: Murillo, Cynthia C.
Published: 02/09/2021
Publisher: University Alabama Press
ISBN: 9780817320782
Pages: 320
Cynthia C. He had a solid reputation in the arts even before we met at the University of Ghana in the early 1970s. He was a versatile actor, scriptwriter, director and inclined to music, with a special interest in playing keyboards. He would even employ choreography or paintings, especially African abstract forms, in other artistic expressions.Legon in the 1970s was made for a prodigious talent like Nana Odei (Naadei). With the black pride political movement at its height, Legon hosted hundreds of students from the US, most of them black who had come to pursue courses in African studies and culture at its source. They brought with them an urgency and edginess about life in general as if to make up for the lost years of slavery. We had not been long liberated from colonialism, and with Nkrumah's star shining again after the infamous 1966 coup, the university was a veritable beehive of cross-cultural activities and fermentation of ideas.It was into this intellectual and cultural cauldron that we honed our skills as scientists, debaters, writers, orators, musicians even entrepreneurs. One of the biggest influences of that time was the Ghana Association of Writers. Atukwei Okai as President was a force of nature. He kept his collection of enthusiastic young writers on their toes, organizing events almost on a weekly basis; one of his star acolytes was Nana Odei Ofei.My Generation made its debut at one of the many "Evening With..." events organized by GAW. It was an instant hit. Of course, as with almost all of Ofei's poems, he had read it to me even as it developed. But hearing it delivered to an audience in a lecture hall above the bookshop was a different experience. For many days and weeks thereafter, we used to quote verses from it just to enjoy the flavor of the aftertaste.Thus, I have waited for decades for the publication of this anthology and what I can say is, better late than never. I am happy that at long last many people will get to enjoy Nana's prodigious talents and that he would receive the recognition he deserves.The poems in this collection reflect Naadei's personality and outlook even many years after the foundations were laid for them. They retain the freshness of his play on words and rhythms from the many cultural influences evident in his cultured universe....I believe that these poems will speak to this and the next generation with the same eloquent force with which Ofei spoke to an earlier generation forty years ago. These poems are better enjoyed when they are spoken, although I do enjoy them in the quiet moments; but I hope Naadei will be able to organize public readings to maximize the enjoyment of those who will have the opportunity to get their hands on this volume."A variety of themes tackled with a unique style of craftsmanship and rendition acquired through African and American multicultural influences are the mainstay of Victor Nana Odei Ofei's poetry packaged in this special anthology. His eyes3-open social awareness, locally and globally, do not take away his playfulness and delight in life. His many lenses move with ease from atrocities in the Congo to last night's dinner out, finding insight in both. Seeing him on stage, or reading him on the page, the audience knows his words are painstakingly chosen and delivered with care. While he points out problems in society, he includes himself in that society and offers a brotherhood of resistance to the things that tear us apart, individually and internationally. How can I give you the tools to survive this brutal world when I have not been able to craft these tools to save myself? How can I stand up for you when my whole life has been spent trying so hard to stand up for myself? I am not perfect. I am flawed. I am pregnant. And in nine months, I will be your mother." And so begins Karsonya Wise Whitehead's first letter to her oldest son. For the past 14 years, she has written letters, poems, notes, and words of inspiration to her two boys, Kofi Elijah and Amir Elisha. She has documented everything from their first steps to their first encounter with racism; from their questions about race to their questions about falling in love. She has borne witness to their tears of joy and pain, their cries of frustration and discovery, and the difficulties that they have encountered growing up black and male. Since this is her love for them poured out onto the page, she chose to publish them exactly as they were written-without any edits or corrections. "Letters to My Black Sons" traces her (and her husband's) journey to try and raise happy and healthy black boys in a post-racial America.

Binding Type: Paperback
Author: Whitehead, Karsonya Wise
Published: 01/23/2015
Publisher: Apprentice House
ISBN: 9781627200585
Pages: 174
Weight: 0.58lbs
Size: 9.02h x 5.98w x 0.40d
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0021/1697/6715/products/img_fd7513d1-1993-4281-8c1b-cf384c33d28c.jpg?v=1605745622
the-collected-works-of-olivia-ward-bush-banks-9780195061963
The Collected Works of Olivia Ward Bush-Banks
Highly spiritual, the work in this collection represents both previously published and unpublished material by Olivia Ward Bush-Banks, a notable and neglected black woman writer.
